Institute for Spiritual Leadership - North Shore Courses
Fall 2007 - 2008

TUESDAY - 10:00- 12:30
Enneagram
This course considers the description and dynamics of various personality orientations. Using the enneagram system, presentations of the nine types are made and interrelationships among them are discussed. Application is made to their use in spiritual direction, prayer and spirituality. This course makes use of lectures, discussion and experiential methods for exploring dynamics.

TUESDAY - 1:30- 3:15
Dreams
This course will consider the rich store of healing, wisdom and direction that dreams hold for the spiritual/life journey. Lectures on the nature of dreaming, dreaming and spirituality, and different approaches to dream interpretation will be presented. Attention will be given to individual reflective work with dream stories and the use of dream work in a spiritual direction setting. Practicum experiences in dyads, triads and larger groups will aim at giving participants a foundation on which to base dream facilitation with directees as well as personal dream appreciation and exploration.

THURSDAY - 10:00-12:30
Quads (Coached Sessions)and Group Supervision

I. Quad (Coached Session)
A quadrad is a group with a staff supervisor and three participants consisting of a director, directee, and observer. Quadrads provide the experience of on-going spiritual companioning with another participant and of developing supervisory skills as an observer. Each program participant is a member of three such group, with a permanent role in each, so that s/he has the experience of directing and being directed by a fellow participant as well as sharing in one other quadrad as an observer. Every quadrad session involves a practical exercise in the art and skills of direction followed by reflection and feedback on the experience by all participants. The director’s supervisor participates in every session. Some sessions are video-taped. Directors in every quadrad prepare and receive from their peers a mid-year assessment. Staff supervisors present a written evaluation of the director at mid-year and at the end of the year.

II. Peer Group
This group concentrates on the professional development of the spiritual director. This is approached by attending to the quality of the director’s presence as well as his/her dynamics. The group also facilitates an understanding of the history and dynamics of the directee, his/her issues and themes, assessments of the directee’s progress, and the direction relationship.

Process, reflection and assessment notes, tape segments and transcripts provide material for these sessions. Each participant meets weekly in a peer supervision group. Quality participation is expected by group members. Insightful comments, questions and feedback to the presenter give evidence of reflective reading of presentations prior to each class.

THURSDAY - 1:30- 3:15
Symbols
By exploring myths, symbols, and archetypes that reveal and affect spirituality, participants have the opportunity to integrate layers of meaning and energy around their lived experience. Further, participants have the opportunity to nurture the ability of holding reverently the lived experience of others, whether classmates or directees. Drawing from cross-cultural expressions and various religious traditions, each class will include experiential activities, reflection, and sharing. Participation in these experiential activities and sharing reactions to these experiences are required.
